Money Management for Vulnerable Elderly and Disabled Alexandrians Senior Services offers money management services to Alexandria's elderly and disabled residents who need help with paying bills, balancing checkbooks, arranging for direct deposit of Social Security checks, and protecting their income. The program targets those people with the greatest economic and social need. A modest sliding fee is applied for Alexandrians with higher incomes. Alexandria has over 1,800 seniors age 85 and older. At this age, sometimes the ability to manage bills, checking accounts, bank reconciliations and tax payments begins to become worrisome. Bills get lost or forgotten. Bank deposits aren’t made or recorded. Creditors become ruthless in their demands. In addition, avoiding outside (and sometimes even family) predators is very important. For other seniors, who have the capacity to learn how to manage their own affairs, but have never had the responsibility of doing so, taking on such new responsibilities can seem daunting. Access to Resources The SSA Money Manager can also help seniors and disabled elderly in applying for, or re-applying for benefits and services, such as SSI, disability benefits, Medicare, Medicaid, health insurance, subsidies for housing and utilities, alternative living arrangements, reverse mortgages, transportation, housing loans, and home repair services.
The money management professional does not offer advice on investments, trusts, or taxes, or assist with tax preparation.
