The City of Arlington contracts with Senior Services of Alexandria to provide Arlington residents who need help with balancing checkbooks, sorting and paying bills, and managing basic living expenses. The program targets those people who have the greatest economic and social need. As seniors age, some of them lose the capacity to manage their routine expenses. Sometimes they are preyed upon financially by outsiders…..sometimes even by family members. The ability to remain in their own homes is precluded when financial assets diminish due to the person’s confusion and/or the predatory practices of others. Forgetting to pay bills, losing bills, not understanding Medicare benefit statements, the inability to balance the checkbook, and other issues can ultimately end an elderly person’s ability to remain in their own home. Budgeting Bill paying Checkbook Balancing Avoiding Predators The Money Management program for elderly Arlington
residents addresses this need. A qualified Money Manager meets with clients
seeking help. Sometimes the elderly person contacts the Money Manager
directly; other times family members request the Money Manager’s
help. The Department of Human Services often identifies people in need
and refers people to the program or refers the Money Manager to the elderly
person. The Money Manager may train a person to balance a check book or may need to balance the checkbook for the person each month. The Money Manager can also help the client develop a budget, live within the budget, and learn how to ‘just say no’ to family members who want to borrow from them or use their credit.
