Meals on Wheels

The Meal on Wheels program delivers an average of 50,000 meals a year to homebound elderly and disabled people.

The program is supported by grants from the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Office on Aging and Adult Services, private and foundation grants, and individual donations.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers, in teams of two, deliver meals to between 94 and100 clients per day, Monday through Friday.

Only a two hour commitment, once a month, is needed from each volunteer. The delivery routes include 12-14 residences per delivery route. Volunteers meet at a central location, pickup the meals and load them in their cars, and commence their “delivery run.” The entire process takes only two hours.

Volunteer Teams of Two + Two Hours a Month = Enormous Satisfaction

The Meals on Wheels Program Manager recruits volunteers, meets them at the central pickup site for the meals, checks to be sure there are enough volunteers, and helps load the food in the cars.

Each client receives two meals daily; one is a hot meal. Often, contact with the volunteer is the only outside contact the recipient has. Volunteers, therefore, are valued by the program manager but even more valued and appreciated by the meal recipients. Many, many elderly are isolated. This once a day interaction with the volunteer may be the only socialization that the person has. Volunteers enjoy the feeling of personal service to their community’s seniors. And the seniors are so grateful for the time and energy and commitment they receive from the volunteers.
