ERADICATE SENIOR HUNGER BY 2020

Senior Services of Alexandria is joining with Meals on Wheels of America to eradicate senior hunger by 2020. Please visit www.mowaa.org/pledge to sign the pledge to end senior hunger. We’ve taken the pledge; won’t you?

SSA’s Meals on Wheels Program Manager Nancy McCormick signs the table cloth expressing her desire to
end senior hunger by 2010.

The Meal on Wheels program delivers an average of 49,000 meals a year to homebound senior citizens, 60 years of age or older.

The program is supported by grants from the City of Alexandria, the Alexandria Office on Aging and Adult Services, private and foundation grants, and individual donations.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers, in teams of two, deliver meals to 100 clients per day, Monday through Friday.

Through a generous donation from the Ronald M. Bradley Foundation, Senior Services of Alexandria is now able to provide extra-special meals on holidays. Without this donation, our clients would not have a meal on a weekday holiday. It is SSA's goal in the coming year to provide meals on weekends. Thus our clients would receive a meal seven days a week.

A two-hour commitment, once a month, is needed from each volunteer. The delivery routes include 12-14 residences per delivery route. Volunteers meet at a central location, pick up the meals and load them into their cars, and begin their “delivery run”. The entire process takes about two hours.

Volunteer Teams of Two + Two Hours a Month = Enormous Satisfaction

The Meals on Wheels Program Manager recruits volunteers, meets them at the central pick-up site for the meals, checks to be sure there are enough volunteers, and helps load the food into the cars.

Each client receives two meals daily; one is a hot meal, and the other is a sandwich and a snack with milk. Often, contact with the volunteer is the only outside contact the recipient receives. Volunteers, therefore, while valued by the Program Manager, are even more valued and appreciated by the meal recipients. Many elderly are isolated. Volunteers enjoy the feeling of personal service to their community’s seniors. And the seniors are so grateful for the time, energy, and commitment they receive from the volunteers.
