DOT Para-transit Services:
- provides approximately 50,000 rides annually and
- has over 1,550 registered clients.
Meals on Wheels
Few things are more essential to life than a nutritious meal. Meals on Wheels is a life-sustaining program that allows seniors who are unable to leave their homes to shop, or who have difficulty preparing a meal on their own, to continue living in their private residences without fear of starvation or malnutrition. Senior Services of Alexandria provides meals in partnership with Alexandria Yellow Cab, the Ronald M. Bradley Foundation, City of Alexandria, Rotary Club of Alexandria, and loyal volunteers, Monday through Sunday and on all Federal holidays.
The Meals on Wheels program:
- has over 200 volunteers who
- deliver 2 meals a day, 7 days a week, to an
- average of 70-100 clients per day, which
- equals approximately 42,000 meals annually.
Friendly Visitor Program
This is SSA's newest program that matches isolated seniors with members of the community for weekly visits. The goal is to relieve loneliness for seniors who may lack the local support of friends and family. Volunteers will receive individual, one-hour training by SSA staff. We would like a six-month commitment from volunteers to meet weekly for one hour with a senior. If you would like to volunteer to make a difference in a senior's life or know of a senior who could benefit from a weekly visit, contact SSA directly at 703-836-4414, ext. 13 or email email@example.com.
Senior Resource Center
The Senior Citizens' Resource Center is a one-stop source for information about services, activities, and resources for the 55+ population in the City of Alexandria. It provides seniors, their families and caregivers with access to comprehensive, dependable information, and guidance on how to get the services they need.
In addition to the expanded services SSA provides through the Senior Citizens' Resource Center, the Center also houses two previously existing services: In-home Care Employment & Referrals and Daily Money Management.
In-Home Care Employment & Referrals
Senior Services of Alexandria provides placement assistance for in-home care professionals seeking work with a senior citizen, and helps locate affordable in-home assistants for seniors requesting help.
Daily Money Management
While most day-to-day activities and events are easily managed by seniors, financial issues can be more challenging. Senior Services of Alexandria provides Daily Money Management assistance, which involves paying bills, balancing bank accounts, and helping to resolve financial problems. Adult children who live out of town rely on Senior Services of Alexandria to assist their aging parents with these tasks and to ensure that their financial health is maintained. Our staff often provides a lifeline for them. Senior Services of Alexandria keeps a vigilant watch for potentially unfair or harmful financial practices, and intervenes when needed. Our staff also offers advice on Medicare, Medicaid, and other health-related programs, and works closely with the City of Alexandria social services, mental health agency, employment and housing departments, as well as an array of other services available to Alexandria's seniors to help them manage their day-to-day financial issues.
For over 20 years, Senior Taxi has provided curb-to-curb service to and from medical appointments, the grocery store, and the drug store for seniors age 60 and older. Reservations are required and must be made one day in advance, though exceptions are made under special circumstances. The cost to the client is $2.00 for a one-way ride within the City limits, and $2.50 per one-way trip up to 5 miles outside the City limits. Senior Services of Alexandria manages client relationships and coordinates with Alexandria Yellow Cab Company to schedule rides for clients.
- provides over 15,000 rides annually,
- has over 1,000 registered clients, and
- assists clients who are not eligible for Senior Taxi to apply for DOT Para-transit or other transportation services.
