Volunteer Opportunities

There is no such thing as a non-profit charitable organization that doesn’t need volunteers! And so it is with Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA).

Meals on Wheels™

Meals on Wheels ™ always needs more volunteers! As current volunteers age, replacements are needed. Currently, we have volunteers who have served homebound seniors for over 30 years each!

Immensely Satisfying volunteerism!

A two (2) hour commitment once a month is all that is required. In two hours you will deliver around 13 meals to homebound seniors and disabled persons. A delivery route description is provided, with clear and detailed directions to each recipient’s home.

In about 5 minutes, you can load your car or van with the meals, and then complete your delivery route in about 1.75 hours.

Serving these homebound individuals is immensely satisfying volunteer work! The clients who receive the food are very grateful for the food and even more grateful for the short break in their isolation that comes with interaction with the volunteer.

Volunteering at Senior Services Office

Grant-writing: Senior Services has a very small staff. This is how we keep our overhead costs low. Having a small staff also means that SSA needs volunteers to support certain efforts. Help is needed to do research into grant-opportunities and to write grant applications for Meals on Wheels, the Employment Counseling and Referral service, the In-Home Assistance and Home Chore worker services and the Money Management Service for the Elderly and Vulnerable.

Write Grants for Senior Services Programs and Services!

We will provide ample information about these programs to you. You can then translate this information into a grant document. Financial information, program budgets and other needed information are also provided by SSA staff.

Reservations: Do you like to talk on the phone? Enjoy helping others? Willing to fill in for a staff person from time to time? We can train you to take reservations for Senior Taxi or the DOT program. Senior Taxi transports seniors to medical appointments and grocery stores. DOT transports disabled persons to those places and more using specially-equipped vans. Seniors are exclusively the passengers for Senior Taxi and predominately the users of “The DOT.”
